Discover your strength
and navigate to wellness

Consistent, supported training empowers us to navigate the stresses of life with more ease, enjoy wellness longer and more fully, and be more present in our lives right now.

Hi, I’m Paul.

Drawing upon professional licensure as a Personal Trainer and years of training as a big-wave surfer, I bring a unique mix of science, grit, and kindness to every training session.

Training to ride big waves increases strength, endurance, and flexibility, but it’s also for oxygen maximization and mental resilience – training the anterior cingulate cortex to respond to stress with strategic calm. This kind of training has a positive impact on many areas of life.

I know how to recover from injury. I've had several broken bones, and the path to a full recovery requires consistent, focused exercises and an understanding of how the body heals and performs.

My rare experience, coupled with Personal Training and Nutrition certifications from the National Academy of Sports Medicine, positions me to help you achieve any goal from a solid foundation of physical alignment and balance.

Some of my favorite places to train

Garland Ranch

This is a great area for a hike/workout blend. It’s sunny and the best for forest bathing.

Carmel Beach

I choose this spot for the steep sand dunes. Running up them helps me build C02 tolerance and increase V02 max.

Asilomar

Asilomar is unmatched for it’s natural beauty and lookout. When I want to reconnect, this is where I go.

Lovers Point

The grassy area at Lover’s Point wins practicality points for a workout without sand. It’s clean, easy to do, and the cold plunge afterwards always gives me a second wind.

Benefits of the Cypress Training Method

Break free from postural imbalances and pattern overload
We all know what sitting in front of a computer or phone can do to your body, and those imbalances continue to cause more harm over time.

Optimize flexibility, core strength, and balance
The most important thing is stabilization and balance.

Increase speed and response time

Speed is moving the body in one direction as fast as possible. Agility and quickness are the ability to react and respond. Both are achieved through activating and regulating the Anterior Cingulate Cortex.

Sleep deeper and experience an elevated mood throughout the day
Learn how to regulate and engage your dopamine and noephirine to better serve your mental health and sleep cycles.

Optional Nutrition Coaching
The impact of nutrition on fitness cannot be underestimated, and I can help you reach your goals in this area so that you get the most out of your training.

I believe training should prepare you not only to move and perform better, but to stay calm, focused, and resilient when life gets stressful. Through strength and mobility training, myofascial release, breathwork and CO₂ tolerance work, mental resilience practices that challenge the anterior cingulate cortex, and personalized nutrition coaching, I help people build a stronger body and a more capable mind.

Through a series of specific methodologies including plyometrics, myofascial release (self massage), hormone regulation (endorphins), proprioception training, holotropic breathwork, tumo breathwork (Wim Hoff), and cold plunge, you will have a great time and achieve great things!

The 5 Kinetic Chain Checkpoints

The 5 Kinetic Chain Checkpoints are a crucial starting point for getting healthy, because they relate to your balance and alignment. Your checkpoints are;

  1. Head

  2. Shoulders

  3. Hips

  4. Knees

  5. Feet

When these are in alignment, you are ready to get strong without an increased risk of injury!

What is the Anterior Cingulate Cortex?

The Anterior Cingulate Cortex is a specific area of your brain that helps you react to physical and emotional pain, and strengthening it can help you improve in a variety of ways, from fitness goals to staying cool in a meeting with your boss.

Our work can include strengthening your ACC through “voluntary stress,” which sounds awful but it can be a lot of fun. Even though everything in your body will tell you to get out of the cold plunge or stop holding your breath, you can learn to be above that, one step at a time. Eventually, you will be the one guiding your ship, an observer of your fight or flight response.

Training can and should be fun!
When you train with Cypress Personal Training, you won’t be bored, and you’ll see progress fast.
